Orchard Classes at Kisharon School offer a formal curriculum

Learn about Woodlands, our informal / semi-formal offer here

The Orchard Classes at Kisharon School provide a structured and functional curriculum tailored to pupils who benefit from a more formal academic approach. Following a high school model, pupils receive discrete lessons delivered by specialist subject teachers, offering a diverse educational experience that mirrors mainstream secondary education. This model enhances learning by allowing pupils to engage in English, Mathematics, Applied Sciences, Life Skills, and Kodesh (Jewish Studies) lessons.

Subject-specific teaching is a key feature of the Orchard Classes, enabling a focused and in-depth exploration of each subject area. The Life Skills curriculum emphasises practical competencies which will include work experience and preparation for adulthood, while Kodesh integrates cultural and religious education, reinforcing the values of the school’s community. These subjects go in tandem with our schools thematic learning, allowing for rich, varied cross curricular integration.

A central aspect of the Orchard Classes is the opportunity for pupils to work towards BTEC Entry Level qualifications, which provide functional and practical skills applicable to real-world settings. Teachers use the BTEC qualification guide as a scheme of work, adapting lessons to meet the individual needs of students. This flexibility ensures that all pupils, regardless of their abilities, can access and engage with the curriculum effectively.

Assessment in the Orchard Classes is comprehensive and tailored, utilising an ongoing collection of evidence as well as pupils taking part in more formal written exams. This mixed approach allows teachers to evaluate both the practical and theoretical understanding of the pupils, providing a balanced measure of their progress and achievements.

Beyond academics, the Orchard Classes focus on developing pupils’ independence skills. Students are encouraged to source their own equipment and work both collaboratively and independently across their time in school, fostering a sense of responsibility and self-reliance.

Practical life skills are further developed through fortnightly Food Technology lessons with a professional chef, where pupils learn essential kitchen and cooking skills. Additionally, students gain vocational experience at the Kisharon Bike Shop, where they learn to repair bikes, use tools safely, and interact with customers. This hands-on experience supports the development of technical skills and social competence, helping prepare pupils for future employment opportunities.

Our Orchard Classes provide a robust, adaptable curriculum that emphasises academic achievement, practical skills and independence, equipping pupils for success in their educational journey and beyond.
